Snow Report

Reports for 2011/12

Snow Report - 25th January 2012

For most of January skiers have enjoyed near perfect conditions on empty pistes under sunny blue skies. This last week skiing has been severely disrupted by high winds so that some lifts have been closed above 2000m. However Serre Chevalier has the benefit of a large indigenous larch forest with many excellent pistes below 2000m protected from the wind by trees. The snow base therefore remains good and with high pressure returning to the Alps with some snow showers the skiing conditions look very good for the impending school holiday weeks.

Snow Report - 9th January 2012

Snow conditions for the New Year are just about perfect. Continual falls of snow since the beginning of January have provided an excellent base for many weeks ahead. There is now over 180cm on the mountain and even at low levels in the valleys there is plenty of snow to ensure that all pistes are well covered and in excellent condition. For the enthusiast there is plenty of powder snow on the tree covered slopes. The weather has now settled down with high pressure dominating the scene giving plenty of sunny days.

Snow Report - 9th December 2011

There have been significant falls of snow in Serre Chevalier in the last 36 hours. There is 45cm of fresh snow on the mountain adding to the earlier fall so that there is a base of about a metre of snow on the pistes above 1800m.

Even at village level there is 20cm of new snow. This means that the resort will open as planned on the 11th December. Although there are some restrictions on the valley links on the mountain, access to the valleys will be possible by the Valley Bus service.

The weather is predicted to remain cold and more snow is forecast by the middle of the week. This means that for Christmas and New Year the prospects for skiing look good for the foreseeable future.

So if you have not yet decided to ski this winter now is the time to enquire about availability in Chalet Les Marmottes.

The resort opens from 11 December 2011 to 25 April 2012 depending on snow conditions.
